The Alameda Brewhouse, a large converted warehouse building in Portland's relaxed and residential Alameda-Beaumont neighborhood, is a regular spot for locals. Spacious and attractive inside, with artistically designed white oak tables and chairs complementing the long bar, the Brewhouse offers a creative menu with such specialities as Salmon Gyros, Chipotle Barbecue Chicken, and a homemade vegetarian Voodoo Chili.
One of the most interesting beer selections of any brewery in the Pacific Northwest is also available at the Alameda Brewhouse. Brewer Craig Nicholls and assistant Andy Kercheval offer complex, creative brews that demonstrate an attention to detail and to history. Craig describes himself as an "herbal brewer," regularly utilizing herbs and other ingredients in the making of his beers.
Their best known ale, the Burghead Pict Heather Ale, is brewed with organic malts, wild honey and wild Belgian heather flower tips. Heather beer was first brewed by the Picts and later the Scots until a 1707 English law mandated the use of hops instead of heather or other plants in the production of beer. The Alameda Brewhouse is now one of only a few breweries in the world recreating this style of beer.
Craig uses herbs in many of his other brews--from juniper in his tasty Irvington Juniper Porter to several pounds of organic rose petals in his Spring Rose Doppelbock. The wooden barrels sitting between restaurant tables are normally in use conditioning some other ale, imparting the oaky flavor of the wood to the brew.
Craig is interested in historic and cultural brews as well. In addition to the Heather Ale, Criag is researching ancient Egyptian beers as well as long-cherished and still-brewed Scandinavian ales. Brewery assistant Andy Kercheval is also making a name for himself with a delicious Belgian-style wit named Cheval Blanc, and a remarkably complex barley wine-style ale.
